VLSI Basic

Here we are targeting the different basics of VLSI from very starting point (Digital Back ground) till understand the meaning of "What is VLSI".
I have divided the all the post in different chapters and then subsections (As per the below index).

If you think, I have missed any topic, please let me know. I will try to cover that in this section (if possible) else I will let you know by when and where It will be included.

Note: Below Index can be changed because of more detailed sections or New topics but broadly following topics will be covered.

Chapter 1 : Digital Background
Chapter 2 : Semiconductor Background
Chapter 3: CMOS Processing
Chapter 4: CMOS Basics
  • MOS design (type of MOS/PMOS/NMOS/CMOS)
  • CMOS Gates
  • CMOS basic working principle
Chapter 5: CMOS Layout Design
Chapter 6 : MOS Modeling:
  • Differennt Prperties

  16. why are higher metal layers used for power and ground rails???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There are lot of reasons but for you ...
      1) these are very close to outside Power Pins.
      2) Metal Width and Thickness are large - So less resistive in nature. So less Voltage Drop , if we will use these For Power and Ground.

  23. Well explained about basics of VLSI. Before I have studied VLSI but some of the topics was not clear to me. After reading your post it was all explained.
    Thanks a lot sir.

  24. sir,
What is the meaning of 16 in 16 ffc technology? Is the following explanation correct?

In advanced CMOS technologies, e.g. 32nm, 28 nm, these numbers usually refer to 1/2 the contacted pitch of the DRAM ,(as they are the most compact circuit which can be fabricated out) which is also 1/2 the pitch of the first level of metalization (the closest to the silicon substrate). It is close to the printed gate length of transistors, but not identical(due to overlapping of gate with source and drain region, which further leads to parasitic overlap capacitance).
